Viagra and its generic competitor sildenafil, sold by Astra Zeneca PLC, are also among the most-prescribed drugs for erectile dysfunction. Pfizer has launched Viagra Connect in the United States, with more than $5 million in sales last year. Sildenafil, the generic equivalent of Viagra, costs about 20 per cent less than Viagra, the researchers note.
Sales of sildenafil plummeted in the United States in 2017, from about $1.75 billion to less than $1.0 billion, from $1.05 billion to $1.0 billion.
Sales of Viagra in Asia also fell by 80 per cent in 2018, as the Indian drug’s sales in Asia’s largest city city of JAPAN declined by 40 per cent to $1.3 billion. Sildenafil also became the first erectile dysfunction drug to be approved for the Asian market.
Sales of Viagra in Canada also plunged, with sales of $5.3 billion, from $1.1 billion in 2018 to $1.1 billion, a drop of 7.4 per cent, the researchers wrote.
